Direction to Marseille (Town of "Notre Dame de la Garde" and the "Vieux port"). The heart of France! Many people think "Paris" when they talk about France, a huge mistake, as Paris is only the Capital of France, not always the most friendly people as you know, certainly NOT like the people from Marseille: "Marseillais". Famous southern people like Raimu, Marcel Pagnol, Cézanne, and many more who lived in this world of smiling faces, playing "Petanque" under the sun of Provence (typical game of south France), drinking "Pastis" (Alcoholic anis drink, made in Marseille), where you will see great, funny and very friendly people who take their time to live, always ready to talk, help and play…South of France is not a Myth, it is the real heart of France! Check-in to Hotel ETAP or similar (few streets from the old port of Marseille). The first night is yours, enjoy the city, restaurants, the music and the people...
DAY 2: VISIT OF MARSEILLE (LA VILLE DU SOLEIL)
Visit of Marseille (After your daily breakfast) with the "Petit Train de la ville de Marseille" (a little train which goes all over town), you will see the main and most beautiful sites of this wonderful city like Notre Dame de La Garde (Incredible Basilique with a Gold St Mary statue on top who is protecting the city).
Notre-Dame de la Garde, called in Marseille "la Bonne Mère" (our good Lady/Mother) is seen here from the Town hall, on the Northern quay. It represents THE landmark for Marseille as it can be seen from miles away by sailors. Notre-Dame de la Garde is thought to protect the sailors that leave the harbor and sailors are supposed to drop a prayer to her on leaving in order to increase their hope to come back!
You will see also the Orthodox church, La Canebiere (the famous main street of Marseille), the old port (le Vieux port), le Panier (an old neighborhood full of narrow streets where French Connection movie was filmed) hotel de Cabre, Hotel Dieu, the Augustines square (Place where Bonaparte lived), St Laurent's church (unique panorama overlooking the entrance of the old port), the Cathedral "La vieille charitee" hospital…This picturesque tour will make you discover the Marseille of the good old times, with this antique fishermen's district and you will reach at the end "La bonne mere" who protects and looks over the city since 1214.
Many restaurants to choose from for your French appetite...Marseille is worldwide known for their famous "Bouillabaisse" (a delicious soup make with fishes that you are finding only in the waters of south France like "Rascasse"), served with croutons "garlic roasted bread" and rouille sauce. A great meal served with ice cold wine (rose) of the region. Shopping is plenty around for amateur of Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Cartier, ect.
